THE CHARACTER
Character Name: James T. Kirk
Series: Star Trek AOS
Canon Point: Post Star Trek Beyond
Character Age: 30
Background: The storied history of Captain Kirk the do over
Personality: Most people think Jim Kirk is arrogant and reckless... and they are exactly right. Because he is, because he doesn't look before leaping. He throws himself headfirst into situations and then figures it out as he goes along. It seems like he's just really lucky, and he is (cats with nine lives have had less chances than him) but what it really boils down to is that he is good at thinking outside the box. He sees what he wants and he goes for it, and the route to get there doesn't really matter. What some people call cheating, he calls recalibrating the conditions of the test to make it actually beatable. But that means he often fails to see the point of a life lesson, because he thinks it doesn't apply to him. He got a lot better about this after he got fed some humble pie by Marcus and Khan and then died. And got resurrected with augment blood but that's messy and we don't talk about it. He finally understood what Pike had been trying to tell him all along. That the rules do apply to him and he can't always justify everything on blind luck like he had been doing since he signed up with Starfleet. Sure, yes he's smart and clever and damn lucky but he needs to consider the risks/benefits and sometimes the risks aren't worth it.
While he has grown in many ways, learning discipline and leadership (finding your life's purpose tends to focus a guy) he's still essentially Kirk and that means he isn't like the typical captain. Professionalism is a word Kirk pretends he doesn't know the definition of a lot of the time. He pouts when he doesn't get his way, and can be really petty sometimes. Kirk often says the first thing that comes to mind even if it's not exactly politically correct... or nice. He's pretty sassy and breathes sarcasm. He has the ability to play political games, he just doesn't like to.
Kirk generally doesn't like rules. He often sees them as in the way to getting what he wants and he always gets what he wants. He's the kind of captain that will flout the Prime Directive to save a crew member's life. And the kind of captain that will be the first off the ship to explore a new world even if it's not exactly safe. He doesn't believe in no-win scenarios. The Narada Incident made him worse about this because everything seemed impossible and bleak and he went from being marooned on an ice planet to leading the Enterprise to defeating Nero and saving Earth from destruction by black hole in less than two days. It kind of went to his head. It doesn't help that he has saved Earth from another homicidal maniac and saved an entire spacestation from a third homicidal maniac in five years.
Enough about his failings though, because he really does a great job as captain. He believes in doing the right thing. He's got heart, and passion and he loves his crew like they're family. Kirk would do anything for them, push come to shove. When they end up in situations where someone gets hurt or worse, dies because of a decision he made, he has a habit of beating himself up for it, even if it wasn't all completely his fault. Kirk takes the blame on himself because he's their superior and because it's one thing to risk his own life and get hurt, it's entirely something else to gamble with someone else's. He has kind of a soldier's mentality when it comes to killing. If they're the enemy and tried to kill him or someone he cares about first, then you better believe he's going to put them down. But he'll grant mercy if asked and he really hates it when civilians get involved. He'll look for another, peaceful alternative first. He just recognizes that peace isn't always an option and will plan accordingly.
On some level, he wants people to respect and like him for being himself and not just because he's his father's son or the guy that saved the planet. He feels like he has to prove himself constantly, not that he really minds because it's also a way to show off but sometimes, it'd be nice if he didn't have to be James T. Kirk all the time. He even considered leaving the Enterprise for another position because he was feeling trapped. It was getting boring and tedious and Jim Kirk is the kind of man who needs constant stimulation. He just needed a little reminder why he loved it in the first place. He needed the reminder of who he is. He's his father's son and that's okay because his dad believed in saving lives rather than taking them. With recent events, Kirk has finally started to come out from under the shadow of his deceased father. Or at the very least, made his peace with the fact that while they are very similar, he's not the same man and better for it.
Despite the fact that he's on a ship with hundreds of people, many of whom are close friends and he considers them all a part of his family, Kirk is kind of lonely. Some of it is a side effect of his position. He's the captain, he can't be giving personal favors to people or be accused of favoritism and he is supposed to be an impartial judge if there's a disagreement ever. There's also the fact where he has to put some distance between himself and his crew to maintain their respect for his authority. But a lot of his loneliness comes from the fact that he's been alone for most of his life. So he craves attention and seeks it in a lot of unhealthy ways. He doesn't have the easiest time in expressing his feelings. It's easier to put on a mask and pretend nothing is bothering him. Like when he was considering leaving the Enterprise, it's doubtful that really anyone on the ship realized it. He does get attached to people who hang around him in spite of his name and his ego. This doesn't happen that often, yeah but he's the kind of guy to forge life defining friendships.
He has a real weakness for the ladies. Well, some people might say he has a weakness for anything that moves but he definitely prefers the moving to be in a miniskirt. But you know, not all aliens have the same boy/girl sexes that humans do so it's kinda hard to tell sometimes. He'll hit on any girl at least once, even if it won't go anywhere, even if he knows it won't go anywhere. He'll back off if it's pretty clear she/he/they isn't interested unless she's Uhura and that's just an inside joke that goes back like eight years.
Powers/Abilities: He's literally human. A freakishly smart human but just a normal, Starfleet trained human. Starfleet trains its officers like a military would, but with classes about space travel along with an emphasis in their chosen track. Kirk was in command, so extra classes on leadership and critical thinking and that stuff.
Power Nerfs (if applicable): n/a
Inventory: Just things he would have been wearing. His uniform, a starfleet gold captain's tunic, a black undershirt, black pants, black boots. His communicator would have been in his pocket. He would have had a phaser on his belt, so up to you guys if he gets to keep it.
Incentives:
- 1. The guaranteed safety of his crew saved during the Storm
2. His leather jacket
3. A sweet motorbike wouldn't hurt.
